Library was founded in 1860. At present, it is housed in a building planned by the architect Alvar Aalto. The library building was completed in 1965. It is a product of the best creative phase of Aalto; one of his most beautiful works. Its personal and timeless style represents the master's architecture at its best.

At the lending department Aalto's idea of reading wells is repeated as in most of his libraries. The angle of sunrays in the north has been taken into account in planning the ceiling windows; the high, large skylights stationed in different positions and directions are real light traps.

The material consists mainly of pictures and 360° panoramas.
